The orgin of the Laughing Buddha or Budai goes back 1000 yearstoa wandering Zen monk Qiece fom China. In Japan he is known as Hotei and in China as Pu-Thai or Budai, which means cloth back. He carries his cloth sack of blessings which stands for wealth and fulfillment of wishes. It never empties and is filled with rice plants, candy for children food and other give-aways. In his sack he also collects the sadness of the people. This figure also carries the oogi, the wish-giving fan which he waves to banish trouble.
Hotei is the patron of children, the weak and the poor but also of restauranteurs, fortunetellers and bartenders.
